Learning Ruby

Posted by Picasa

I'm learning Ruby on Rails and I'm excited to finally get back to Smalltalk where everything is an an object!

Only people from the Nerdery would understand above sentence but I wanted to document it here. In class, at the start of the hour, there was much trepidation but you couldn't tell it from the rehearsed mannerisms of the odd characters in my class. You can say many things about the Nerdery but feeble personality is not one of them for we are strong in numbers and characters, and probably more accurately, strong in numbers WITH characters. Case in point is the goatee dude who seemed the most normal of all of us sporting the typical smart wool shirt and outdoor gear until he starts inflating a personal portable bum cushion. I love it!  I feel at home here.  I'm with kindred spirits.

I also have a deep love and passion for the jargon of my people. I think it's all messed up, but in the end funny, quirky and so flagrantly self-aggrandizing that it is froth full of material for creative writing. I shall try to document but as is wont to happen when I bring this geeky side, I defy my technical writing roots and shy away from documention. In OO speak, the code is the document. If I could write this blog in Ruby i would but I'm just learning, give me seven weeks. But for now, I say

def say_hello(name)
var = "Hello, " + name
return var
end
