when an elephant meets a sea shell

 this is what happens
when an elephant meets a sea shell

the elephant
is a gift
from my
mom

the only piece of jewelry
i am allowed
to keep

which is a darn shame
for i absolutely love jewelry
not for the material wealth they possess
but for the memories they hold

i've had this necklace
since i am old enough
to have memories

all of us girls
in the family
have one

which makes me part of a herd

and this herd
went diving once
a very long time ago
at Apo Islands
a sanctuary
so pretty
it is hard to describe

you just have to go
to see for yourself
the beauty

and perhaps
you yourself might find
your own personal herd
your own icons in life
the vessels within you that keep tabs
of the people you love

so when you are working late at night at the office
you can revel in the comfort
that your herd is not so far away
and the sea does not separate us
so long as they are within us

what i want you to know

is that
i wish
there was a train
that led me
back to you

love,
Ashima

on reflections

most days i am fine
being by myself

it is a habit
i've gotten used to
through force or circumstance

but there are days
when i look at the mirror
or when i see my reflection on a window
and i'm always surprised
at the stark image of solutide
that stares right back at me

i don't think i'm truly alone
so why does it look like it

on flowers

last saturday
important things of note:
i got a new haircut
i wandered into a beautiful flower shop
i mean
look at those floors

for flowers
there were so many to choose from
all pretty

when i got to my car
i got a parking ticket
for going over
10 minutes

ah spring
you think change is in the air
and all is good and merry

but
sometimes
you
can't win them all

night walk

spring came early
it's still technically winter
it's so strange to see
like watching flowers bloom at night

a quiet start

i'm off to a quiet start to the year
which is what i needed

i end the first
with what is now tradition---
celebrating my birthday
with my best friends Sarah and Evan
a family
who I have come to see
as my own

i love these two boys

-O+E-

E is very funny these days.
when he says my name
it sounds very French
"Me-ree"

-as if croissants were just  a  plate away-

O is as sweet as ever

he took that photo of me.

my eyes are baggy
from having stayed up late
to catch my family
and a dear friend
--jecee--
on skype
thousands of miles away

i miss them very much
and wish I could be

*
there
*

*
but here
*

is no small consolation
either

life
is
good.

i hope your first week of this dragon of a year
is as calm and as full of promise
